    The Successor to Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo is primed to reveal what their next console is going to be at some point before the end of the fiscal year in March 2025. I thought it might be fun to cover the facts and the rumors surrounding it just to generate hype and get some predictions going.

    Facts:
Nintendo is "always working on new hardware." Way back in 2009, Satoru Iwata graced investors with this tidbit of information. Speaking in an investor's call, he said
"We do not think that Nintendo DS and Wii will last forever. Our internal hardware teams are always researching and working on new hardware so that we can launch them whenever we find a very interesting idea."
Here's a Nintendo Everything article with this quote and much more from Iwata regarding the matter. This was less of a "way Iwata does things" and more of a look into Nintendo's internal dealings regarding hardware development. It was refreshing to see how easily he talked about it for the time.

Nintendo tweeted about the reveal of the Nintendo Switch on October 19th, 2016 at 8:30pm ET via an official tweet (still calling it by its codename, the "NX"). 13.5 hours later, we were graced by the reveal of the console and its name via a trailer with an official YouTube upload at 10am ET. The video was set to private by July 6, 2022, and has not been available to view since. Plenty of other places had the trailer re-uploaded and have not had to take them down (such as GameSpot's re-upload here).

On May 7, 2024, Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that we would get a formal announcement of the "Successor to Nintendo Switch" in an official tweet:
This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.
The same day, during an Investor's meeting, they held a Q&A where someone asked for a bit more information about the wording of this announcement:

By May 9th, people on Famiboards had compiled information of public customs shipment information from Nintendo, Nvidia, and others over the last year or so in which they glean should be the hardware for this successor console. The information itself isn't necessarily fact regarding the successor console, but the fact that they went this far and got this much information to share is worth noting here, whether it's successor console related or not.
Someone on reddit compiled all the information pretty nicely.
The majority of information found was from a company named Hosiden. This is a Vietnamese company known for manufacturing Nintendo console parts. They found indentifiers that mostly matched up with Switch console part identifiers.

On June 27, 2024, Nintendo held their 84th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders and held a Q&A. It was there that Nintendo basically affirmed that they have enough parts produced now, that another shortage of components shouldn't "significantly affect production."
Click image for larger version Name:	image.png Views:	0 Size:	68.2 KB ID:	2025

On September 4, 2024, David Gibson (person who attends Nintendo JP's meetings and gives us rough translations earlier than the official translation release) points out Hosiden's upcoming plans for production.
No-one seems to have noticed the Nintendo assembler- Hosiden is spending ¥2bn on production equipment and ¥1bn on automation in FY3/25 for its major customer in amusement (Nintendo). I still expect Sept news and March 2025 release for next device.
    ---

Every announcement of an official Nintendo presentation since the announcement of the console's announcement has been followed up with a message of there being no mention of the successor. You can see it in the description of each presentation's video:
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

It's important to note that Nintendo isn't going to bring up anything like new hardware until they are confident that they are truly ready to talk about it. Getting confirmation about an announcement of new hardware says to me that they are beyond development and are in the final stages where it's basically a heavy time for the Marketing department. I believe that logos, stock photos, videos, presentations, commercials, etc. are what the focus is right now as they wrap up first-run hardware production and prepare for packaging and mass production.

I also think it's worth noting that keen eyes over at Famiboards seem to believe they found a year's worth of public customs data for massive shipments of what seem to be Nintendo-related parts for things currently existing hardware do not use, and that a month later the president is saying there's no reason to worry about any shortages.

    Rumors and Speculation:
I'm going to try and keep things on as "credible" folks as I can. They can be completely wrong, but their track record and reputation leads to some credence that they might have a point

    Relevant People:
    • "Nate the Hate," or "NateDrake," is known for having leaked a ton of information about upcoming announcements for games across all platforms for years. He has settled down in recent years due to a ton of backlash for some information he's shared being wrong and people getting more than angry for getting their hopes up - which soured him on the experience of leaking - but he still likes to speculate with "Modern Vintage Gamer" on his own podcast.
    • Pedro Henrique, or "PH," or "Brazil," a Brazilian journalist, has a reputation for having "insider information" about Nintendo's plans. I am not sure where else he would have been prior to Famiboards, but as far as I can ascertain the spotlight on his Switch 2 statements start with a Famiboards post from February in a Switch successor speculation thread.
    • Anyone else mentioned here are generally a step towards something about the above people. Currently there are only 2 "credible enough" people to follow regarding Switch's successor console. There have been plenty of other people that have given reason to believe many different things, but the track records either aren't good enough or are just terrible so not worth tracking in my opinion.
    • I may make a post after all is said and done with other people that got things right, but for now I'd like to stick to things credible enough to breathe the copium and hopium in for.
    • fwd-bwd is a user on Famiboards that is known to have a near-native ability to read Chinese and post translations of leaks from Chinese forums. While he never claims to have any actual confirmation of information that he translates to be real and believable, he does his due diligence ensuring that what he's translating is as accurate as possible to the Chinese poster's intentions.
    July 11, 2022
    • fwd-bwd makes a summary post about a months-long conversation (since April!) speculating over a Chinese forum poster's description about a "new part" that seems to be for a new hybrid console as opposed to an existing model of Switch. It is described as more of a U-shaped hollow kickstand as opposed to the solid kickstand that the Switch OLED model currently uses. From the description, fwd-bwd leans on believing it's a kickstand for potentially the next Nintendo console and will look similar to the kickstand found on the HP Spectre X2.
    February 7, 2024
    • In a podcast with guest co-host John Linneman (of Digital Foundry), Nate claims (timestamped) that GDC (slated for March 2024) would be when Nintendo would want to show the new hardware off to more developers/publishers, and so an acknowledgement of sorts would likely happen around there.
    February 16, 2024
    • Pedro posted on Famiboards that he has heard that Nintendo would publicly acknowledge the successor to Switch in April, but says he personally leans on Nate the Hate's prediction.
    February 19, 2024
    • Pedro made another post on Famiboards, claiming he heard about a general Nintendo Direct in April, an Indie World presentation before then (likely in March) and the Switch successor's reveal would be in June. He mentions that these things are always in flux, but he's feeling good about that information.
    April 11, 2024
    • Pedro follows up from that Feb 19 post, stating he no longer believe a Direct is happening in April, and apologizes for any hopes he may have dashed. He attributes the folly to reporting about what he heard months in advance, when there's too much time for plans to fluctuate. An Indie World presentation happened on April 17, 2024.
    • Nintendo's president Furukawa wound up making an official statement about its existence a week into May via an X post (linked in the Facts section of this thread).
    • On the same day, someone summarized a list of Pedro's murmurs throughout the year on Famiboards, and he quoted this post saying it was an excellent summary.
      • Switch 2 is slated for March 2025 still - nothing has changed since his original report
      • expect announcement to pan out similar to Switch 1 (Sept-Nov for full reveal etc)
      • third party should be allowed to mention Switch 2 multiplatform releases from June on even without showing it, since Nintendo is now openly talking about it (e.g. for games announced for 2025 they can confirm "PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch Successor)
      • Direct in June is the last proper Switch 1 Direct but there's rumors about a Partner Direct later in the year
      • Nintendo will announce more remasters in the Direct, he expect Metroid Prime 4 to be the last big reveal for Switch 1 and released this year but he doesn't know and it's just speculation on his part
      • he expects more leaks to come out now that the successor has been mentioned
    • At this point, Pedro seems to get a little smarter about sharing his information, waiting until it's closer to actual timing so that his information is as accurate as possible.
    June 10, 2024
    • Pedro states on Famiboards that a Nintendo Direct isn't slated for that week. It's for late June, but an exact date isn't set yet.
    June 15, 2024
    • Pedro specifies further about the June 10 post, stating it would be the following Tuesday morning.
    • Nintendo wound up airing a Nintendo Direct that Tuesday morning, on June 18, 2024.
    August 10, 2024
    • Pedro's claimed in a YouTube podcast (timestamped) that Nintendo was pushing up some things from September to August in order to make room for an inevitable successor console announcement.
    • Famiboards member Guaraná gracefully summarized this in English in a Nintendo hardware speculation thread.
    • Nintendo announced a Direct showing off their upcoming museum on August 18th, set to air on the 19th.
    August 18, 2024
    • After the Museum Direct announcement, someone on Famiboards criticized Pedro for not having any specifics and that the Museum Direct could have just been a fluke. He responds directly (by quoting that post) that there are more things coming in August.
    • Nintendo went on to have a double-whammy presentation, combining an Indie World showcase and Partner Showcase into a single presentation on YouTube on August 27, 2024. Many people suspect this used to be two separate presentations slated for different days in September based on Pedro's statements.
    September 1, 2024
    • Pedro posted on Famiboards to make a point to say that there may not be a reveal in September. He states that other presentations internally moving up from September to August does not mean there is going to be something in September. He later reiterates this in a response to a response for people to keep an open mind.
    • Level-5 Games announced that Level-5 Vision 2024 would finally have a set date of September 24th, 2024. They originally announced at the end of their Vision 2023 presentation that the next Vision presentation would be in April 2024. The official video was then privated (here's a timestamped video from GoodVibesGaming reacting to the 2023 presentation and seeing the April 2024 announcement) once April 2024 rolled around, and they announced via X that it had been delayed until "Summer."
    • This is significant because a lot of people believed that the April presentation was meant to coincide with the rumors of a March reveal of the Switch successor console - and that it's possible that March was the original plan, but it needed to be pushed back and so Level-5 pushed their presentation back as well. It was just listed as "Summer" as they needed confirmation of a reveal date, and many believe that this presentation is still meant to be set after a Switch successor reveal, so lean into a reveal happening before the presentation;s Sept. 24 date.
    September 4, 2024
    • Christopher Dring, with GamesIndustry.biz, wrote an X post stating there had been "industry whispers" for "something" Switch 2-related happening within September.
    • David Gibson, who attends those Japanese Nintendo meetings and gives us rough translations of those meetings earlier than the official translations become available, posted on X on the same day that he believes that a reveal will be either between September 18-26, 2024, or early October 2024 in order to avoid the Tokyo Game Show (slated for September 26-29, 2024)
    • Andy Robinson, of VGC, responded to someone else on the same day on X commenting about Chris Dring's post that he wouldn't bet his house on anything happening in September.
    • In a Famiboard thread regarding these three tweets, Pedro responds in kind to all the speculation that there is basically nothing there to get excited about.
    • Nate the Hate posted on reddit in a Switch 2 thread in /r/GamesLeaksAndRumours very matter-of-factly that the Switch successor will have backwards compatibility.
    September 5, 2024
    • Website GNN News held an interview with Falcom's president which seems to suggest that the double-Direct presentation back on August 27 was in fact pushed up from September. In the interview (which is very loosely machine translated) he mentions something around the lines of how he didn't expect the Trails in the Sky the 1st remake to be announed "at that time." I personally find it hard to believe that the president of the company wouldn't know they would be showing their game then, unless it was originally slated for a bit later.
In addition, Kondo also explained the reason why the day before the event (8/27) on the Nintendo Direct live show revealed the complete remake of "Legend of Heroes: Sky Trail FC" "Sky Trail The 1st". He said that he did not know that Nintendo would choose this time to hold the Nintendo Direct public "Sky Tracks". The news of the remaster, so I didn't mean to give everyone here a shock at this juncture (laughs).
    • French tech industry investigator Billbil-kun - who claims he is not a leaker based on his X profile - sarcastically asks about a Switch successor reveal in September while reposting Chris Dring's post. Ryan from the Bronx, who claims to have been the leaker Midori (who had a great track record but a bit of drama for pretending to be someone he's not) responded to this post with "Really."
    September 6, 2024
    • Billbil-kun made a cheeky tweet about the Switch successor "whispers" while promoting his article of information surrounding a Switch OLED bundle coming to Europe. Many seem to suggest that Billbil-kun is meaning to say that the "September presentation" that everyone is hoping is for Switch 2 is actually about this OLED bundle.
    September 8, 2024
    • Spanish Nintendo-based media people Daniel Quesada and IchiDan both posted on X some teases of traveling to Washington state on the same day. It was later found that they were flying out to Nintendo of America alongside other Spanish streamers/journalists for unknown reasons.
    September 10, 2024
    • Paul Gale (of PaulGaleNetwork.com) posted on X that recently a trailer-like commercial was filmed to "promote a next-generation console." He predicts a reveal of whatever it was anywhere from one to six weeks from now.
    • Nate the Hate responded (as NateDrake) to a thread about this on ResetEra stating that he thinks it could be related to something he was sent in August. He assures us that it's very hard to verify, and that "There was one bit of information that I've been waiting to see if it appears in a game trailer, as it would help verify the information further; but the game in question has not had a new trailer released, yet"
    • He further clarifies that his information is indeed about the Switch successor console. He also clarifies that he has details on a game ad from the same person that he was hearing about the console trailer/commercial that Paul was talking about, and that if he sees the thing he was told about this game ad on the next piece of media that comes out about it, that he has reason to believe the tidbit about the console thing.

    • On the GTA6 Discord server, Discord user moistycharlie made a post about the Switch Successor release. Since the link is to a screenshot hosted on Discord and those links get wiped after some time, I will quote the post. He is fairly unknown in the leaking scene. Getting one thing right does not mean his sourced information will always be correct.
      - Switch 2 gets announced early next month. I'm hearing a base MSRP of $400.
      - It'll come in 2 different SKU's haven't gotten clarification and the specific differences between them though.
    • This is significant because moistycharlie correctly posted about the PS5 Pro back on September 9, 2024, in the same GTA6 Discord server. Again, since Discord-hosted links go bad after some time, I will quote that post here as well.
      - I can now confirm ps5 pro gets announced September 10th
      - the day after the iPhone event.
      - My sources at Sony just corroborated these statements
    September 13, 2024
    • Summarized on a post on r/GamingLeaksAndRumors, which was taken down due to being more of a news post instead of a leak or a rumor, Hosiden (known for manufacturing Nintendo things) in a Vietnam industrial region is suffering from the recent Super Typhoon "Yagi." Nintendo Forecast has an excellent summarization video (which has since been put on private) on how this could mean the Switch Successor may not be revealed soon, as well as unlikely to release in the first half of next year.
    • I had this reddit post open on my phone and have pasted a screenshot of it into this post.
    September 15, 2024
    • Famiboards user "fwd-bwd" (who can read Chinese at a "near-native" level) made a post translating claims from a Chinese forum poster (with no track record, warning this post was just for fun and giggles) about Switch 2.
      • Switch 2 production has started in [somewhere in China, which I don't want to translate]
      • 1000 units per day [Edit: This is one worker, not the whole line.]
      • Slightly larger than Switch 1
      • Smaller bezel
      • Black and white Joy-Con
      • Slightly larger logo, with “2” on the side
    • Famiboard user "gonanzir" posts in the same thread the same information, however he added that "the joycon still slots in." fwd-bwd responds to that with his own interpretation that the original post's description came off as if it were a press-fit or snap-fit joint instead of the same slide rails the Switch currently has. He goes on to say that the description for this was brief and vague, and the interpretation could be wrong. In a follow-up post, he describes what he understands this to be as similar to the GDP XP (point #8 on this site), but in reverse where the protrusion is on the tablet itself and the controller has the slot.
    • "gananzir" also mentioned in his post that the kickstand is "hollowed out and shaped like a "U" and followed up later in that thread that it "can be lifted by hand." fwd-bwd corroborates, pointing back to his 2022 post regarding a part with a similar description (see above in this post under July 11, 2022).
    September 17, 2024
    • Rogersbase uploaded a YouTube Short unboxing video. He claims it's a box "from Nintendo" with a bunch of Nintendo-based LEGO products inside. He mentions he'll be on a flight within 48 hours to "an undisclosed location," and the way he says it had people believing it was a Nintendo event.
I'm literally on a flight to an undisclosed location in about 48 hours at this point. So I don't know why they would send such a massive package, but I mean, it must be something cool if it's this big!
He later posts on X that, while it's fun to speculate, he's on an unrelated work trip. He also posts on Famiboards that it was a LEGO video, and mistook the box as being from Nintendo. He also changed the name of the short itself for further clarification, though the "from Nintendo" verbal statement is still in that short. People seem to believe that this is deflection and that he slipped up just enough to seemingly spill some unintentional beans.
    • On the same day, a few people that tend to report things that they've heard (and wind up having some credibility and truth to their findings) say they've been hearing that a ton of developers got invited to Nintendo of America the day prior, on the 16th. This includes Stealth via X, Liam Robertson via Bluesky, and Laura Kate Dale via X. Laura even quoted Josh Fairhurst's post (from Limited Run Games) about having had a great time visiting NoA.
    September 18, 2024
    • fwd-bwd translated further clarification from that Chinese forum poster regarding the stuff from the 15th. Apparently their Joycon claim was a little off base, because they don't work on the portion of the factory where the Joycons would be made. He says he dealt with some broken joycons and some where white and some were black. This means what he saw may not be indicative of the final color schemes.
    • A poster on a Chinese social networking community (not the same as the forum the warehouse workers were saying) - that fwd-bwd reposted via Famiboards - showed off some fairly convincing renders and pictures of what looks to be a prototype version of Nintendo's new console. He warns that these could be fake, but also suggests that they could be images of an earlier prototype. He later posts some findings other Famiboards members have discovered. As well as a secondary USB-C port.
    • A bit later, fwd-bwd explains that the poster where these images came from was a 3D reverse modeler who put some renders together based on the descriptions of the other Chinese posters from the other forum. If what the original Chinese forum poster from the 15th said was true, these renders would be awfully close to the real deal, give or take. The photos of actual tangible objects are unexplained.

    • As twitter user "Necro" Felipe points out in his own tweet, the 4chan post (provided in that tweet via a screenshot) should be taken with a huge grain of salt, however there is something about it that holds credence thanks to an official Nintendo tweet. The 4chan posts that the "Nintendo Switch 2" will launch in May, sometime around Japan's Golden Week, during the same week as the Orlando, FL opening of Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios. There was no date for the theme park opening at the time this post was made. A little later in the morning, Nintendo tweeted the official opening date of the theme park, leading credibility to the 4chan post.
    • The 4chan post in question lists the following:
      • System is called "Nintendo Switch 2" and will be revealed on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 with a 3 minute video showing off the new system.
      • The first game shown will be a new Mario Kart game with characters from F-Zero, Zelda, Star Fox, and Pikmin as new racers. It will have "8 player split screen mode" though no specifics about that were given.
      • A quick look at Metroid Prime 4: Beyond showing playable Sylux, a remake of Kid Icarus: Uprising, and tiny peeks at a new 3D Mario and Animal Crossing games - in addition to third parties such as Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon Ball Sparking!! Zero.
      • The system will release in "May," sometime around Golden Week in Japan and the same month as Super Nintendo World's opening in Orlando. A full reveal will happen in January/February.

What are your thoughts, hopes, or expectations for the next console?

This is some real quality stuff. Thank you for all the work you put into this!

The staying power of the Nintendo Switch has been nothing short of incredible. Of all the quirky things Nintendo has tried out over the years, this paradigm of a dockable portable that can serve as your home console too is one I hope they continue for their hardware down the road. The amount of advancements being made in the ARM computing sphere has also been incredible to watch. It's not quite Moore's law levels we were used to back in the day, but I love to see it all the same.

My response as to what I would see out of the new Switch is going to be a real boring one: more powerful hardware under the hood but keeping the same portable/dockable interface would be my hope.

I'm looking for pretty much the same things. They did a good job future proofing the dock since it interfaces with USB type-C, and using anything different would be a step in the wrong direction.

The size and portability has been amazing. It's nice to be able to toss this in a small case with a few games (also in a small case!), and take it pretty much wherever. It's got other consoles beat by miles in this aspect.

Backwards compatibility is also a major ask, but I'd honestly be shocked if they deviate from this.

If the parts in the customs data is to be believed, they will be using an updated version of their current chip, so backwards compatibility should be a no-brainer in my opinion.

I've been hearing rumors that have a small bit of traction that the dock itself has wireless capabilities (not internet). The way I'm understanding it is that it would be a reverse Wii U. Instead of the console projecting to the tablet, it would be the console projecting to the dock in order to display on the TV without having to physically dock it. This would be as an option, and physically docking would still be an option. I don't really hold much weight towards it, but it's one I wanted to jot down before my list of rumors worth reading in the second post gets posted.

I filled in about as much as I could with the rumors and speculation in that second post above.

Can you believe that all of that is summarized? That's a lot!

Respected video game leaker billbil-kun has posted on X to say that the industry whispers around a Switch 2 reveal this month is actually for a new Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) bundle which features…

I've seen some people comment that this throws some water on the red-hot hype train. 2025 isn't that far away.

There was a Wii U bundle announced shortly after the Nintendo Switch was revealed in Europe back in 2016. They aren't going to stop marketing one product because they've announced another. Especially one that's still selling very well. Billbil-kun also leans into the idea that whispers are going around, but nothing's concrete about the successor console.

Personally, I can wait until the very last day of March next year to hear anything about this successor. But I don't think one guy getting marketing scoops about a Switch console bundle means that we won't be hearing about a new console this or next month. Not all sources have information from all aspects and departments of the company they're leaking, after all.

Fresh off the scoop, though!! There is a website with an interview with Falcom's president that seems to suggest the double-Direct thing at the end of August was in fact pushed up from September. In the interview (which is very loosely machine translated) he mentions something around the lines of how he didn't expect the Trails in the Sky the 1st remake to be announed "at that time." I've added it to the rumors and speculation section.

I've been led into some information with Level 5 (owned by Nintendo) that was pretty interesting. Not sure if I buy into any of it but look for yourself. It's two paragraphs in the Sept. 1 area of the rumors and speculation section.

Some more interesting developments. It could be about something completely unrelated, but someone caught wind of an un-named and unspecified next-gen console trailer having been recently filmed, and Nate the Hate seems to correlate this with something he was told in August. Added details to the rumors/speculation post above.

I went back and formatted the rumors/speculation post so that's it's easier to read and follow.

New stuff for today from a user on the GTA6 Discord server (of all places) up in the rumors/speculation post. Personally, I don't think anyone knows anything, but I love chomping at bits.

Super Typhoon "Yagi" has wrecked the southern part of China as well as Vietnam and several other areas with several confirmed reported deaths and terrible flooding. I've updated the rumors/speculation post with details on how it affects the Switch successor, and I hope the people living in all of the areas that were hit can recover efficiently.

EDIT: I still had the reddit post open on my phone prior to it being taken down, so I took a screenshot of it. I had to take two screenshots and splice them together, but I have attached it to the post.

Added some stuff from September 15, 2024, of which one of the things adds up to something found and talked about as far back as July 2022! I added both the Sept 15 stuff as well as the July 2022 stuff in order by date, so check the top of the post for new information in addition to the Sept. 15 stuff!
