We've been dropping the ball a little on threads for our Game of the Month series, and it's time we did something about that! The Uncharted Waters games are rife with historical threads just waiting to be tugged at, and Cancer was kind enough to share one of those earlier tonight. In New Horizons, one of the 6 main characters is loosely based on a real-life pirate. Their story is really cool, and I hope you think so too.

I suppose this would be the *ideal* spot to get into the nitty gritty and be nitpicky! That being said, I am really really enjoying this series and I'm very sad I didn't know if their existence until you introduced them to me, so thank you!2

Portland and Sammelhaven forever! (if anyone's wondering, Sammelhaven is the name of the harbor town Random Encounter and I built in Valheim- if anyone plays, we have a dedicated server and you should come visit!, join the ranks of these cool kids: Wandervox Kustom Sarthis Ryonite )
Also for the record, I love Boston, it's one of my favorite cities, but Portland is the city I was born in, and it has a history of saying "Fuck Boston"Last edited by Althena; 01-14-2025, 11:07 AM.Comment

Fun stream last night! We briefly talked about the great Mali Empire, how its greatest ruler ruined the economy of an entire country, and how they sent out a fleet of ships into the Atlantic that never returned. These little ripples in the pool of history could have very well altered our entire history if things happened just a little differently.
And then there was Zheng He, the famous Muslim Chinese admiral who led a treasure fleet that showed off Chinese wealth and power as far away as east Africa. Though medieval China's population and land holdings put it on par with the Roman Empire at its greatest expanse, they didn't seem as interested in maritime colonization as later European powers were. I always wondered why. Maybe the Europeans' need for resources were a driving factor, as well as the impetus of Christian conversion. But that kind of speculation is well beyond my pay grade.
Lastly, we finally discovered Japan! Thanks to our investments in Nagasaki, we unlocked the famed "tekkousen" atakebune. IMO, these are the strongest ships in the game, sporting giant holds with ample guns while having the maneuverability and speed of other row boats. Historically, however, these were not very agile ships. The Koreans may have faltered to seasoned Japanese samurai on land during the Imjin War, but their armored turtle ships ruled the sea and eventually forced Japan to cease their invasion.
You'll have to forgive me for the rambling, but I eat this shit up. It's one of the reasons I adore this game. Let me close with some more screenshots. While building a fleet of tekkousen ships, I lucked out and managed to get the rare Goddess figurehead at the shipyard. They cost 50k and are worth every penny if you can find them! Also, have some funny supply ports.

We finally finished New Horizons! I had a lot of fun revisiting this game again, and no doubt I'll do it all over again sometime in the future. Since the end of the month is drawing closer and we have a post-mortem to do at the end of it, I'm going to focus the rest of my streams this month on Uncharted Waters Online. I hope you guys enjoyed watching this as much as I did playing it.

I hope you guys enjoyed our trip through Uncharted Waters Online! I love revisiting about once a year or so, seeing what's changed and running into my company mates. For such a niche game, it makes me happy to see it still alive almost 15 years after its international debut. The trade stream in particular yielded some really good chat moments, but this one takes the cake.
