The NY Game Awards crowns Astro Bot as game of the year.

The Xbox direct was actually really good! Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 and South of Midnight are very on my radar, and likely day 1 purchases!

Capcom just recently announced a showcase to show off the Capcom fighting collections they have coming out, the new Onimusha game, and will have some dedicated time to showcase Monster Hunter Wilds coming up on Feb 4th.

I'm near the end of Astro Bot right now. Big recommend to people with a PS5 and people on the fence.

Monster Hunter Wilds is gonna be huge.

The PlayStation State of Play for Feb was last night, and there are a few titles that have really hit my radar!

I was happy to see Split Fiction. I've loved all the games from that studio and this one seems like the next step in those types of co-op games.
Directive 8020 looks to be a really good sci-fi fit for that Dark Pictures developed horror genre.
I got really pulled in by the trailer to Tides of Annihilation. It'll be a while yet, but I'll be excited to learn more.
And finally, Saros. Housemarque has made some great games, with Returnal being their last one. This looks to be an evolution of the Returnal style of game, and I am absolutely ready to learn more.

Nippon Ichi slipped under my radar, as did Silent Hill f.

Nippon Ichi held a showcase this morning with 5 new projects. The presentation (YouTube link in the OP) is all in Japanese, but Gematsu wrote up an article of everything shown.

Silent Hill f takes place in a 1960s Japan. Weird, considering I though Silent Hill was the name of an actual town that just happened to be linked to this alternate/parallel hellscape. In any case, it's looking good!

I feel like it's a good idea to explore Silent Hill's phenomena happening in others places and times, but as you say the series is called Silent Hill. On one hand, the phenomena are so strongly tied to the town that it doesn't seem right to call the game Silent Hill at all, but on the other hand the phenomena are so distinctive to the Silent Hill brand that if they tried to make a new IP out of it everyone would say "eh it's just Silent Hill under a different name". Sticking with the brand recognition is, in my opinion, the lesser of two evils.

Nintendo surprised us with an announcement for what might be the very last Switch 1-centric Direct presentation this morning, slated for tomorrow morning. This comes less than a week before the Switch 2 blowout Direct next Wednesday. Interesting times!

The Switch really is the most special thing Nintendo has made since the Wii and is right up there among their greatest consoles. What they've managed to squeeze out of it is unreal. The fact that the Switch 2 is alleged to just be an iterative update on the current hardware is also telling.

I've always seen Nintendo to take an Innovative to Iterative approach to their generations. They innovated with NES and iterated on that with SNES. Innovated with N64 and iterated on that with GameCube. Innovated with Wii and iterated with the Wii U by trying (and failing) to incorporate their other successful hardware with multiple screens. Now they've innovated with the Switch and are iterating with the Switch 2. The same goes for their handhelds. They Innovated with the Gameboy and iterated with the Gameboy Advance (I know some consider Gameboy Color to be a different generation, but I don't sit in that camp. I consider GBC more like the DS to DSi kind of upgrade). Innovated with the DS and iterated with the 3DS.

There were some pretty innovative things thrown in with some of those iterations, to be sure, but they still came across as more of an iteration of what came before rather than an entirely new take on "entertain and delight" in my opinion.

While it fits the mold of my perception, however, I do agree that they had the right idea to focus on the same form factor and beef up the specs to handle more intense games graphically. I honestly think they've put themselves in a position that that probably can't do an innovative generation beyond the Switch 2 as the pattern would go, and instead have pigeon-holed themselves into a successful niche that may or may not sustain as the generations move on. I guess we'll see in 8-10 years!

We're in the countdown for Summer Game Fest and all the other shows that come along with the season! I should be able to fill out the list with information for a lot of the same shows as last year in the coming weeks.

Loads of updates to the list today! Saturday, June 7th, has been filled in with a whole slew of representation-based showcases.

Also, an Indie Showcase named Six One snuck in at some point and I didn't even realize. I've got that on the list with a link to its show now.

There are so many of these showcases and announcement shows... should I omit a chunk throughout the year for better truncation on the bigger shows, or is seeing the long list of shows enlightening and preferred? Keep in mind we are only halfway through the year with announcement shows, with a few set in the second half so far.

Okay, three more shows cropped up out of nowhere. Unreal Engine had their own presentation earlier today, showcasing a ton of awesome features for the engine using The Witcher IV among other games as examples. PlayStation has a State of Play coming up tomorrow. Devolver Digital has a presentation on Thursday after the Summer Game Fest event and the Day of the Devs follow-up.

We still haven't heard from Ubisoft or EA that I'm aware of. Nintendo is also rumored to have a Direct sometime here in June, though that's up in the air as usual.
