Randy Pitchfork says "if you're a real fan, you'll find a way to make it happen"

Recently a fan wrote to Pitchfork asking about the rumored $80 price tag for BL4. His response was basically it isn't his call and that real fans will figure out how to pay the price.
I've been thinking about this quote for a couple days and I still don't think big companies have figured it out yet. If you're gonna charge me $80 (or $90 if you're nintendo) then you're gonna have to REALLY convince me the game is worth that price. Why pay that price when I can get a handful of indie games and more then likely get more overall enjoyment from them. The two best games I've played this year are ex33 and split fiction and I didn't pay $80 for those games.

i always knew ceos were a bit out of touch with the community, but come on idk if borderlands has thay kind of pull anymore. The movie damn sure didn't do it any favors.

if games hit an average of 80-100$ in the future would you consider things like gamepass or just become a pirate?

I'm already on Gamepass almost continuously.. I would much rather be able to buy every game I want to try out straight up, but it's just not feasible for me, and Gamepass offers me a pretty decent selection of both old and new titles for a decent price, even with the recent price increases. They're starting to dip their toes into some scummy models so we'll see how it shakes out in the future.

I think I'm definitely not the target audience for a majority of AAA titles nowadays. I am however the target audience of Nintendo titles, because I adore so many of them, and they're looking at upping their prices as well. That one hurts, because of how much of a walled garden Nintendo is, and they never depreciate their prices. Honestly, I don't think I'll be able to bring myself to buy a new Nintendo title even for series that I play religiously like Zelda. I'll just be hoping I can pick them up at discount shops for a better price a year or two after release.

Honestly, it feels really bad that I work my ass off and I'm getting priced out of my main hobby I've maintained since I can remember, while simultaneously getting shafted in every other area of finances as well. Luckily there's still indie and AA devs making amazing titles for decent prices, and some that blow major releases out of the water without a contest.

Every other time that the AAA companies have tried something like gatekeeping the decisions they make "If you're a REAL fan... etc." it has bit them in the ass. Hopefully this continues.

Honestly it reminds me of the diablo immortals reveal. The whole "don't you all have phones?" Fiasco.

AAA budgets are so inflated now. I think devs are so hyper focused on making every hair strand be perfect while forgetting to make the game FUN

My favorite games don't have erection-inducing graphics. Memorable gameplay, compelling story, fun mechanics, good music. That's all I need.

It did come across as really tone-deaf, yeah. Looking at his twitter account, he seems like some old grandpa who just wants someone to listen to his stories, which is now how that tweet comes off to me now.
