    Final Fantasy Tactics Remastered Announced

So, the two biggest games during the recent State of Play made me very happy. Bloodstained will be getting a prequel, and I love Bloodstained, so that rocks! But the even bigger news for me is that Final Fantasy Tactics is finally going to be available on modern consoles and now officially on PC! Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite games. I live and breathe the game. I was thrilled when the War of the Lions version came out, and Michael Christopher Koji-Fox retranslated the game into the same medieval tones used by Alexander O. Smith in Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII. I suffered through the PSP version's slowdowns just to be able to play the game portably, with its beautifully rendered new cinema scenes. Plus, the new Dark Knight job was really damn cool! The PSP version was almost perfect!

There hasn't been a definitive version of Final Fantasy Tactics because of slowdown that occurs during magical attacks. If you're into emulation, the ISO can be easily patched to fix it, but Square-Enix never issued an official fix. The PSP version also didn't showcase the mid-battle poetry like the original. "Life is short. Bury!" was a thing of the past. I was always so sad that I never got to read the fun monologues, the way they popped up in the original.

But now we'll finally have the game on modern consoles and PC! Final Fantasy Tactics: the Ivalice Chronicles is being spearheaded by Creative Studio III. I knew they were working on other games aside from Final Fantasy XIV, but I never expected this. It looks like you'll be able to play in Classic mode, or in a Remastered mode that offers voice acting and visual adjustments. It would be really cool if CS3 added additional characters like Clive Rosfield, to go along with Cloud, Luso, and Balthier from previous iterations. After playing the Return to Ivalice raids in XIV, I have high expectations for the voice acting. I bet they're gonna add in the mid-battle monologues too, because they clearly know how impactful those lines are from how revered they're treated in XIV! I hope we have more positive things to be revealed about this Remaster before its release on Semptember 30th.

Some drawbacks: the collector's edition looks amazing, but I can't afford $250 for it. I'm gonna feel that FOMO hard. I also must say I am weirded out that there will be in-game DLC for pre-ordering and for the Deluxe Version, which give new colors for Ramza to wear. The idea of monetizing a remaster in any way feels scummy.

The bad news is that we're not getting War of the Lions content, including: Luso, Balthier, Dark Knight, Onion Knight, extra Beowulf & Reis content, and Agrias's Birthday. The "Classic" version will have the War of the Lions translation and feel very much like the original PSX version in terms of atmosphere, just wide-screen and on CS3's new engine.

The good news is that for the Enhanced version of the game, Matsuno rewrote much of the Japanese script to take advantage of the voice actors' cadence. Some characters, like Agrias and Mustadio, were not given much time to shine in the story after joining the party in Chapter 2- now many characters will have more battle banter in later chapters when brought along to specific fights they have personal stake in. This is also great for characters like Rapha, Marach, and Meliadoul- characters whose presence largely disappeared after finally joining the party. It will be great to see these characters have more content!

I'm disappointed about the lack of WotL content, but the stuff they're adding sounds substantial enough that I'm still very excited. Given that they've completely remade the engine, if this version of the game does well, making new Final Fantasy Tactics titles would not take nearly as long with the new source code they have made. My fingers are crossed for a good release for the game.

This game kicks ass. The voice acting is an extremely nice addition. The new plot bits have been brilliant as well.

It's been such a joy to play. Not having the WotL extras is a pain but is mitigated by how nicely polished everything else is. My only real complaint is that I can't just play it non-stop or I'll show up to the next stream with level 99 characters.

I'll miss some of the bad translations. Dispell being Death Spell and Dragon Breaths being bracelets always made me laugh.

There is charm in badly translated games, indeed.

Thinking about my personal Tier list for Final Fantasy Tactics jobs:

                        C Tier
                        Dancer
                        Bard
                        Archer
                        Onion Knight

                        B Tier
                        Knight
                        Black Mage
                        Oracle
                        Orator

                        A Tier
                        Chemist
                        Squire
                        Monk
                        Thief
                        White Mage
                        Time Mage
                        Summoner
                        Geomancer
                        Samurai
                        Dark Knight

                        S Tier
                        Ninja
                        Arithmetician
                        Mime

Arithmetician is crazy powerful, but I'm generally too lazy to go through its menuing process. And Mime is difficult to use, but hilariously powerful.

I would damn near bump Monk to S tier. I employed martial arts to great effect, as Chakra rules and Aurablast is a decent ranged attack. Making it your main job with dual wield from Ninja makes it incredibly hard to beat, in a way that I don't think Ninja itself even quite matches.

And math? Hell yeah brother. There's a reason why FFT speedruns have a No Math% category.
