    Tabletop RPGs

This thread is dedicated to traditional tabletop RPGs, e.g. D&D. But I open with an unusual entry: a dungeon crawler that you can play by yourself. I'm really tempted to pick this up.

It's all up to you to kick down the door, check for traps, and try to survive!

I'll start off with my personal favorite - Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) from Goodman Games. It's easy to say that DCC is mix of D&D 3.5's d20 resolution system and BX's race-as-class system, but it's so much more. The core rulebook (which is the only book) is a massive tome, but the rules can be condensed to ~30 pages. It focuses heavily Appendix N (https://goodman-games.com/blog/2018/...is-appendix-n/), the literary inspiration for Gygax when writing early editions of D&D. The art is really evocative of danger that pretend adventures face (googled Stephen Poag, Doug Kovacs, or Peter Mullen art). Magic is unpredictable, dangerous, and generally weird with each spell having it's own effect and misfire table. Combat is exciting and very manageable. DCC's modules are a stark contracts to 5e's several hundred page volumes which take months to run. Most clock in between 25 and 40 pages. Finally, the community that surrounds DCC is the best TTRPG community out there - Bar none. I have made so many really great friends posting or playing in virtual games.

On the topic of virtual tabletops (VTT), my favorite is Foundry VTT (https://foundryvtt.com/). Unlike roll20 and many of the online options, Foundry is not subscription based and only requires a one-time purchase. The default mode is self hosted, but there are many services that host for you such as https://forge-vtt.com/. Player connect to the game through a web browser, so the experience for players is similar to roll20 or another vtt. It support ~200 different rule systems at the moment, so whatever you want to use it for likely already has a module. Additionally, it has a large library of mods to create the experience you're looking for. It gives the host much more control than many other VTTs, but it does have a learning curve. Definitely worth looking at.

It would be cool to do a one-session game of some kind, similar to the Tuesday night game nights I hold with my bunch. I could see a Saturday being good for that sort of thing. If there's any interest, we could put something together!

I would be down, I usually do map night with my FFXIV crew, but I think I can miss one without it falling apart.
