I thought it was a good move for consumers to stop gating the new chip in the pro models.

Apple — and analysts — were betting that these new, long-awaited features would drive an upgrade “super cycle,” and mark a new era of growth for the tech giant. But recent research into the motivators behind upgrades found that a just 18% of consumers buy a new iPhone because of new features. A majority only opt to upgrade their smartphones once they become obsolete, or are stolen or damaged.
I feel like this is the buried lede. I will pretty much use my phone as long as it is able to run the apps I need and isn't outright broken. I'll probably get a battery replacement soon which will keep the phone fresh until it no longer gets security updates. Getting a new phone these days for reasons other than being outdated or damaged just feels like wasteful consumerism.
