Do domains even mean anything anymore?

I ran across an article in the verge that discusses the future of the .io domain now that the UK is relinquishing control of Chagos Islands (https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/8/2...chagos-islands.) I started to think about how we use TLD some 40+ years after they were initially envisioned, and I'm quite sure they are meaningless at this point. Itch.io has absolutely no connection to the Chagos Islands in the same way that .tv domains have no relation to Tuvalu. Am I alone in this or am I missing something?

I didn't think domains had much to do with countries, but had more to do with intent. .edu, .gov, .com, etc all had more intent implied than say .co.jp, or the like. I wouldn't have even thought .io was a moniker of a country code at all, because of sites like itch.io...
