I ran across an article in the verge that discusses the future of the .io domain now that the UK is relinquishing control of Chagos Islands (https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/8/2...chagos-islands.) I started to think about how we use TLD some 40+ years after they were initially envisioned, and I'm quite sure they are meaningless at this point. Itch.io has absolutely no connection to the Chagos Islands in the same way that .tv domains have no relation to Tuvalu. Am I alone in this or am I missing something?
Do domains even mean anything anymore?

I didn't think domains had much to do with countries, but had more to do with intent. .edu, .gov, .com, etc all had more intent implied than say .co.jp, or the like. I wouldn't have even thought .io was a moniker of a country code at all, because of sites like itch.io... -
I never knew what the postscript .io was for anyway. Never really gave it any thought. As an outsider to domain shenanigans, it's curious that so many games and game-related things have found them attached to .io websites.Comment
